Lower back pain is a common symptoms frequently reported among a majority of the population in the United States. Most commonly seen in people ranging from 18 to 35 years of age, the prevalence of sciatic symptoms varies tremendously from 1.6 percent throughout the general population to 43 percent in a selected working population. Unfortunately, only 30 percent of individuals suffering from sciatica seek medical attention only after experiencing these painful symptoms for a year or more. In a majority of cases, sciatica is caused by a herniated disc involving nerve root compression.
Athletes are specially trained to exercise and compete vigorously without experiencing injury or aggravating a previously existing condition. However, accidents and direct trauma during their specific sport or physical activity can inevitably result in damage or injury to the individual. Muscle or tissue damage are common in sports and can be dealt with accordingly but when a bone fracture occurs, these may be more delicate and may require additional diagnosis and care in order to properly help an athlete recover.
Among the general population of athletes, stress fractures can be a rare cause of pain, accounting for only 2 percent of all reported sports injuries. However, a considerably higher number of stress fractures are diagnosed in long distance runners and triathletes.
Stress fractures occurring around the pelvis are significantly uncommon although, a majority of them are often considered a differential diagnosis when athletes, specifically long distance runners and triathletes, report hip, groin or buttock pain during and after running. Because stress fractures around the pelvic/hip region, including the sacral, pubic rami and femoral neck region, are rarely diagnosed, understanding and discussing the anatomy of the injury, their clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment for each of these types of stress fractures is important for an athlete in order to find a solution for those who do encounter it.
Low back pain is one of the most prevalent symptoms that lead people to seek diagnosis and treatment with a healthcare professional. When the individual’s low back pain is accompanied with pain in one or both legs or buttocks, resulting in symptoms similar to sciatica, it may be an indicator that the patient may have a lumbar disc herniation, also referred to as a herniated disc, ruptured disc, or slipped disc.
The lumbar spine consists of five vertebrae that extend through the length of the ribcage and pelvis. From top to bottom, these vertebrae are medically labeled L1 through L5 and they’re each separated by intervertebral discs. The discs are made up of a fibrous tissue known as the annulus with a soft nucleus found at the center of each disc. These discs are fundamental towards the proper function of the spine, performing the important roles of shock absorption and distribution of pressure.
In the instance the annulus becomes ruptured or torn, the nucleus can become separated from the disc. This complication can decrease the disc’s ability to properly separate the vertebrae, an issue which often leads to increased pressure due to the compression or impingement of the spinal nerves found between each vertebrae of the spine. Individuals with a lumbar disc herniation and symptoms of sciatica commonly experience pain and discomfort related to the pinching of the nerves, which can in turn radiate down the legs.
Generally, a herniated disc is caused by the natural degeneration of the body’s structures as we age. If not diagnosed or treated in time, however, this simple wear and tear complication can develop into a more serious injury or condition. In addition, intervertebral discs can also tear due to trauma from heavy lifting or as a result of a sudden injury, such as an automobile accident or a work injury.
Athletes who perform daily rigorous training and/or participate in regular competitions can often be at a higher risk of suffering an injury or developing an injury. Because most sports or physical activities require the repetitive and constant use of the lower extremities, experiencing a complication which affects the lower back, buttocks, thighs and even the feet of the athlete can ultimately alter their performance.
Medial tibial stress syndrome, commonly referred to as shin splints, is not considered to be a medically serious condition, however, it can challenge an athlete’s performance. Approximately 5 percent of all sports injuries are diagnosed as medial tibial stress syndrome, or MTSS for short.
Shin splints, or MTSS, occurs most frequently in specific groups of the athletic population, accounting for 13-20 percent of injuries in runners and up to 35 percent in military service members. Medial tibial stress syndrome is characterized as pain along the posterior-medial border of the lower half of the tibia, which is active during exercise and generally inactive during rest. Athletes describe feeling discomfort along the lower front half of the leg or shin. Palpation along the medial tibia can usually recreate the pain.
Complications affecting the lumbar region of the spine can affect a wide amount of the population at least once throughout their lifetime. Low back pain is one of the most frequently reported symptoms, together with various other symptoms, causing pain and discomfort. Although low back pain can include several other symptoms, a collection of specific symptoms could signal the presence of another disorder: sciatica.
Affecting millions among the American population, sciatica can be characterized within a range of minor irritation to a severe, disabling complication. Despite how frequently its diagnosed and treated, there’s an assortment of information about the condition that many individuals do not yet understand and its often a topic of confusion among the general population.
First of all, sciatica can best be described as a group of symptoms from an injury or an underlying medical condition rather than a singular disorder. The term is used to specify symptoms of pain, tingling and numbness sensations, or weakness that often originates on the lower back and radiates through the sciatic nerve found in either leg.

While it’s not commonly considered, chiropractic care can offer tremendous benefits for patients during their pregnancy and there have been no known contraindications to chiropractic treatment throughout this stage of a woman’s life.
All doctors of chiropractic, or chiropractors, are trained to work with women who are pregnant. Investing in the fertility and overall health and wellness of women throughout their pregnancy or those whom are trying to conceive is a routine care for a majority of chiropractors.
Many chiropractors take a specific interest in prenatal and postnatal care and they may pursue additional training to specialize in the treatment of pregnant women. The following represents designations of chiropractors who’ve taken advanced steps in working with infertility and pregnancy health and wellness.
CHIROPRACTORS HAVE CLAIMED FOR YEARS THAT WE CAN BE MORE COST-EFFECTIVE. BCBS HAS THE DATABASE THAT WOULD PROVE OUR THESIS, BUT THERE SEEMS TO BE A RELUCTANCE TO ALLOW OUR PROFESSION TO ACCESS THE DATA THAT WOULD PROVE US RIGHT.
In August 1999, Blue Cross/Blue Shield (BCBS) of Kansas presented a study titled “Lumbago Treatment.” This data was made available from a new program installed by BCBS called the McKesson Episode Profiler.
This program gave BCBS the ability to sort data according to specific diagnoses and compared the costs, frequency, and other factors between peer groups.
The data revealed that while less than eight percent of the study group were chiropractors, 38 percent of the patients chose to seek chiropractic care rather that allopathic medicine. This fact indicates that patients desire and are satisfied with the management techniques of the chiropractor.
The study did not include any hospitalization costs for surgery or any fees paid to orthopedists or neurosurgeons for costs associated with surgery. If the data included costs for these procedures, the savings for chiropractic would have been much greater.
When sorted by the average cost per episode, chiropractic is more cost-effective than anesthesiology; neurosurgery; neurology; registered physical therapy; orthopedic reconstructive surgery; physical medicine and rehabilitation; and rheumatology.
The greatest cost-effectiveness of chiropractic is demonstrated when one considers the global cost of allopathic care. The physical therapist can only receive referrals from an allopathic provider. An allopath can only write prescriptions. The allopathic provider primarily orders surgeries, nerve conduction tests MRIs, and CT scans. Hospitalization charges are totally allopathic charges that cannot be associated with chiropractic. When these charges are considered, the tremendous economy of chiropractic management becomes indelibly clear.
The majority of chiropractic charges were associated with the basic office-treatment-related services performed. Eighty-nine percent of the chiropractic charges were for services related to the treatment, while only 45 percent of the family practice costs were related to treatment of the condition. The remainder of the costs were for expensive diagnostics.
Patients who visit the family practice provider have about a 15 percent chance that they will have a MRI or CAT scan. These services cost an average of over $1,000 and provide no treatment, only a diagnosis.
For each 100 episodes, the chiropractor provided 265 modalities. For each 100 episodes, the registered physical therapist provided 885 modalities: over three times as many units of physical therapy provided by RPTs than chiropractors. This is a cost that has to be globally charged to the family practice providers, since patients cannot access RPTs without a referral from a medical doctor.
Registered physical therapists provided 303 office visits per 100 episodes, compared to 255 by the chiropractor. When RPTs are combined with the other allopathic portals, there are 598 office visits per 100 episodes. Therefore, the myth claiming chiropractors treat the patient more than the allopathic portals is obviously just diversionary, and not based on facts.
Patients had a willingness to return to the chiropractor that was 22 percent greater than the combined totals of allopathic portals. This indicates a level of satisfaction that is demonstrated by the patient’s willingness to return, based on results and confidence.
The BCBS lumbago study demonstrates that chiropractic is not only cost-effective but also quality effective. Adding chiropractic services would only decrease the cost to the plan. What is hard to explain is the prejudice against chiropractic in the design of BCBS plans, and their reluctance to push the study and analysis of the data to the next level. It almost seems as though there is a fear that exists in the minds of those in positions of power, preventing them from presenting the cost comparisons with the global cost of allopathic portals to chiropractic. Chiropractors have claimed for years that we can be more cost-effective. BCBS has the database that would prove our thesis, but there seems to be a reluctance to allow our profession to access the data that would prove us right.
I guess the million-dollar questions are “Why?” and “What are they afraid of?” Perhaps it is the fear of knowing how to handle the data once it proved that chiropractic was more cost-effective. Perhaps it is getting past the mindset that adding chiropractic benefits is going to increase reimbursement levels. Perhaps they cannot see that there would not be a cost increase but a cost savings from directing patients to more cost-effective portals. Allowing osteopaths to treat broken arms did not increase the number of fractures; it simply shifted the point of access to treatment. Likewise, allowing patients to freely access chiropractic services would not increase the number of spinal related injuries; it would simply allow the patient access to desired and more cost-effective services.
I imagine that BCBS of Kansas regrets releasing the amount of information they already have. There seems to be a reluctance to push the analysis of the data to the next level. It is now up to the profession to “hold their feet to the fire” and push for more data to support the fact that chiropractic can be more cost-effective.
Athletes regularly participate in rigorous training and competition. While they routinely stretch and exercise accordingly to prevent experiencing injuries while performing their specific sport of physical activity, they constant and repetitive movements of the body can often cause damage or injury, even developing an aggravating condition regardless of the process they follow to avoid harm. Hamstring injuries are recognized as frequent injuries among athletes, particularly due to the use of the legs in a majority of sports or physical activities.
Hamstring injuries are significantly common in athletes and the risk of re-injury is reasonably frequent. Researchers found that in elite-level Australian football, hamstring injuries were the most prevalent type of sports injury which required time away from competition. Researchers also determined that low-grade muscle strains occur most frequently, followed by more significant myotendinous junction tears. Fortunately, these have shown a positive response to conservative rehabilitation. Hamstring avulsions are considerably rare, same as complete ruptures originating at the hamstring. Such type of sports injuries can be debilitating.
Muscle ruptures in the form of hamstring avulsions have been reported more frequently in the younger population due to an immature epiphyseal growth plate found on the ischial tuberosity in older children and adolescents. Hamstring avulsions in adults with fully fused ischial tuberosities are contributed to be ruptures of the proximal hamstring tendon or complete avulsion fractures of the ischial tuberosity.
An immediate diagnosis following proper treatment methods for ischial tuberosity avulsions or tendon ruptures is essential at this point because several individuals whom were treated non-operatively for hamstring ruptures experienced residual loss of power. Further complications for hamstring avulsions include pain, weakness, cramping during locomotion and pain while sitting. As with the majority of tendon avulsions, treating the injury as soon as possible can present better outcomes than delaying treatment. According to research, receiving treatment within four weeks of injury resulted in better recovery outcomes as compared to those which received treatment after four weeks of injury.

What training, licensure, and experience do you have?
Before you ask any questions, make sure that the chiropractor is licensed to practice in your state. Then find out if the DC chiropractor has an area of specialty and what that is. Also ask the chiropractor how many years of experience he or she has.
What is treatment like for people with a health problem like my own?
How often would I come in for treatment?
How long should I expect treatment to last?
Chiropractors will outline a course of treatment and goals for your health problem. The chiropractor will talk to you about how long it should take for treatment to work for you. Your chiropractor will change your treatment as needed to help you reach your treatment goals.
What treatment would you suggest for my health problem or health goals?
Chiropractors do not prescribe drugs. They do not perform surgery either. Most chiropractors will suggest an adjustment/manipulative treatment. This treatment is used to:
Bring back normal joint function
Decrease pain and nerve irritation
Increase blood flow
Reduce muscle spasms
Improve range of motion
Chiropractors may also use other treatments, such as:
Massage and other soft tissue methods

You should expect the chiropractor’s office staff to treat you with courtesy. When you call, are they prompt and professional? Do they answer all your questions? Do they help schedule future appointments? Be sure to pay attention to how the office staff treats you. Will you be comfortable working with the chiropractor and their staff?
After asking the questions listed above and meeting the chiropractor and office staff, think about the answers you were given. Does the chiropractor’s personality and approach seem like they will work for you? If so, you should feel comfortable that you have made an informed choice.

Sciatica is a frequent diagnosis among the general population of individuals who report low back pain as well as pain and discomfort along their buttocks, thighs, and legs. The tensor fascia latae, or TFL, is a well-known hip muscle among healthcare professionals and rehabilitation specialists. Because of its function, this muscle may be responsible for pain and dysfunction in the lower extremities, pelvis and spine. Research studies conclude however, that this muscle is poorly understood and needs further examination. Furthermore, the majority of research which has been already conducted have in fact simplified the accurate anatomy of, not only the TFL, but also its anatomical relationship to the iliotibial band, or ITB.
The TFL, or tensor fascia latae, is a complex muscle which is intricately arrangement anatomically with the ITB, or iliotibial band, and it performs various essential functions, such as allowing hip mobility as well as transmitting fascial tension through the fascia latae located in the thigh and the iliotibial band. The TFL also provides postural support during one-legged stance and limits the tensile stress on the femur caused by the combination of bodyweight, ground reaction force and how these create individual bending forces against the femur.

Whiplash-associated injuries can occur in a variety of settings where any form of accelerated motion may cause the head and neck to jerk back-and-forth with tremendous force against the entire body. Trauma from a slip and fall or an accident from sports or physical activities have been demonstrated to result in neck injuries such as whiplash, however, automobile accident injuries are the most prevalent cause of whiplash-associated injuries.
The sudden thrust of the head can damage or injure the complex structures which surround the cervical spine, often leading to the severe irritation and inflammation of the tendons and ligaments in the neck. In addition, other tissues as well as the tendons and ligaments of the cervical spine may become overly stretched and torn.
A neck injury can be identified if the victim involved in an automobile accident experiences symptoms such as: neck pain and stiffness; worsening pain with movement; loss of range of motion in the neck; headaches, most generally originating at the base of the skull; tenderness or pain in the shoulder, upper back and/or arms; tingling or numbness in the upper extremities, fatigue and dizziness. Chiropractic adjustment has various applications. From the treatment of chronic pain and pre-existing conditions to early or sudden onset pain. Perhaps most frequently cited, sufferers of back and neck pain, sciatica, migraines and more have found relief from chiropractic medicine.
In fact, many medical doctors recommend that their patients seek chiropractic care for a variety of conditions before seeking more invasive measures such as surgery. This sentiment was (echoed by the American Medical Association) as recently as 2013.

Roughly 80% of adults have experienced back pain at some point. (In a study by Consumer Reports), 14,000 sufferers were surveyed. None of these individuals had undergone back surgery of any type. By the end of the study, Chiropractic adjustment was rated as the #1 treatment option.

This Sunday over 111 million people will tune into watch the SuperBowl. Behind the scenes both teams and coaches have been fine tuning their game plans as they prepare for the biggest game of their lives. As part of the players preparation there have been a few lucky individuals with direct access to care for these athletes. Referred to as the “magic workers” by some players these men are the team Chiropractors who serve both the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots.
For the last 12 years, Dr. Gerry Ramogida and Dr. Jim Kurtz have had front-row seats to the spectacle of NFL games as chiropractic consultants for the Seattle Seahawks. Attending every game, Dr. Ramogida was supposed to stay with the team for just a couple of years so he could show the trainers how to use some of his soft-tissue techniques. But as players got used to getting adjusted by him on game days, a temporary job turned into a permanent one.
“There’s so much behind the scenes that you don’t get a sense for when you’re watching a game. It’s a massive effort. I am just happy to be a part of the preparation as these guys get ready to go out and do what they do best, compete.”
In a interview with Global News Dr. Ramogida stated, “Over the period of that first season and into the next year, things very quickly became integrated. It’s been a great experience,” he says.
In recent news, The Professional Football Chiropractic Society (PFCS) has taken pride in announcing that all 32 teams in the National Football League offer their players and personnel chiropractic physician services as part of the triage in managing and preventing injuries. According to the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress, this distinction is a benchmark for the profession and documents the important role that chiropractic care plays in optimizing athletic performance.
“The robust need for chiropractic care in the NFL has been deeply driven by the players’ desire for peak physical conditioning and not simply for injuries,” states Spencer Baron, D.C., “From the earliest years of full contact football, their bodies are subject to structural stress that doctor of Chiroprctic (DCs) are specially trained to care for. ”
Attending this weekend to the New England Patriots is Dr. Mike Miller. Over twenty five years ago he became the official chiropractor of the New England Patriots. Since that time, he’s treated hundreds of players, watched ownership of the team change hands three times, and seen the Patriots go from one of the worst franchises in the National Football League to a team readying themselves to play in the Superbowl this weekend.
In a interview with Dynamic Chiropractic Dr. Miller states that his position with the Patriots involves him being present during mini-camps, training camp, preseason games, regular-season games (both home and away), and postseason games.
During the games, I see an average of at least 40 players, coaches, and other personnel who are affiliated with the team. I would say just about 90 percent get chiropractic services, because the present coaching staff of the Patriots has almost mandated chiropractic care with the players. The coaches speak about it at team meetings, as the new players and rookies come into the team in the preseason. During mini-camps, they explain the significance of chiropractic, and that we have a chiropractor who has had phenomenal results in dealing with injuries and preventing them from occurring, and that they would like the players to proactively be treated [by] me and begin a chiropractic course of care.
During the season, if there are any injuries, they (the medical staff) will generally send the player to my office to be evaluated. By game time, just about everyone on the roster is adjusted, and you start to learn the idiosyncrasies of each player, because each one wants certain things checked on them. Some are very firm with extremity adjusting; others enjoy use of a specialized technique that we use, called Graston Technique. Basically, it takes me about four hours before the game to go through the entire roster.
The NFL has just released a statement advocating for all NFL teams as now employing a Chiropractor as part of their medical staff.
